Valluvar College of Science and Management aims to instill values of responsible citizenship and community welfare among students, addressing social issues like global warming, tree plantation and rainwater harvesting. Inspired by Thiruvalluvar’s teachings, the college initiated the project “A Tree to A Student” in collaboration with the Department of School Education, Karur, and the Environmental Club, Karur. On 22nd December 2020, students of Manmangalam Government Higher Secondary School participated by receiving 100 saplings of bamboo and neem, along with newly opened savings accounts to cultivate the habit of saving. The college team monitored the saplings quarterly, motivating students to water and nurture them by setting measurable growth goals. Cash prizes were awarded based on the height of the saplings—Rs. 200 for over 5 feet, Rs. 150 for over 3 feet and Rs. 100 for reaching the cage height. The project successfully helped students learn the importance of saving both money and nature, while the growing neem trees contributed to a healthier ecosystem and increased oxygen production.
